A Touch of Moroccan Majesty


I am a lover of space. And I am a lover of aesthetic. My home is a carefully crafted experience that I hope promotes a heightened sense of self, of peace and of safety. I like plants and incense, my windows are always open and if possible my doors too. I like bright, clean spaces and light-- lots of light.

I've always thought I leaned more toward the "bohemian" style of living with a minimalistic/modern flare, but when I saw these images taken by the talented Patrick Cline for Lonny Mag, something in me fell hard for the Moroccan style, and I had to share.

 

This is all of what I want surrounding me. Color and simplicity. There is something ancient about this style of design. It's like history is knit into the tapestry and scrubbed into the walls. It sound weird I'm sure, but everything feels like it belongs there. Like every piece is intentional and unique.

 

These spaces just feel right, with it's rustic tones and simple adornments. My favorite part about these images, and this style, is that with a few curated pieces, like the ones below, this Moroccan look is totally achievable.

I also can't wait to get out and travel again. These types of posts make blogging from home hardly bearable.

On that note: shout out to my nomads, you out there experiencing life in the wilds! I know creating space is hard on the road, but it is possible! Pack this Moroccan style along with you. Find yourself a blanket at the local market, or have someone send one from home. Roll that sucker up and strap it atop your backpack! It's the little things, the simple pleasures that help balance your soul out there. And for extra credit you can definitely give that blanket to someone you meet along the way! Stuff is just stuff, but it can mean something, so give it away and experience how precious what you have can be for someone else.

Mermaid Butter

Before we get started, let us state for the record that this is a vegan recipe- so don’t freak out over the title. 
No mermaids were harmed in the making of this post.
 

All hilarious jokes aside, the name was inspired by one rock star ingredient:  Spirulina. 
Spirulina is essentially algae that is packed with iron and boosts your immune system. Read more on Spirulina Here.

HERES WHAT YOU NEED

2 cups dry roasted, unsalted almonds
1 tsp celtic or himalayan sea salt
2 TBS maple syrup
4 tsp Spirulina powder

PROCESS

To begin, place the almonds into a food processor and blend away. 
After about 2 minutes, stir your mixture and blend again for another 3 minutes. 
Next, add in your sea salt, maple syrup, and Spirulina powder. 
Blend for another 1-3 minutes. 
Feel free to add some of your favorite cold-pressed oil or additional maple syrup to adjust the consistency. 
Place on apples, stir into oatmeal/ your favorite stir-fry, or simply indulge with a spoon.

Spirulina and why you might care.

I love everything about the ocean.  Maybe that’s why I think it’s really hip to mix algae into my morning smoothie.  You could say it makes me feel a little more like a fish.   It also makes my body feel super health charged while I’m walking on land.  “Out of the sea, wish I could be, part of that world…”  The Little Mermaid, anyone?  Just me? 
 

Fun fact: When I was a kid, I was pretty close to chopping the “M” off of the front of my name and changing it to Ariel.
That was an over share.  Enough about me.  Let’s talk about algae

 Here’s what spirulina has got goin’ on…

  1.  Iron rich
    An iron deficiency can lead to fatigue, decreased immunity, and slow brain function.  2 tsp of this stuff will provide you with 10 mg of iron.  To put this in perspective, the daily recommended amount of iron for adult males is 8 mg.
  2. Great source of B-12
    B-12 helps to regulate the nervous system which can lead to improved brain function and alleviation of depression.
  3. Boosts immune system
  4. High in chlorophyll
    Chlorophyll is literally “plant blood”.   It works wonders for purifying and oxygenating the blood. 
  5. High in calcium
  6. Contains 4 times the amount of antioxidants found in blueberries
  7. Helps to flush toxic metals from the body
  8. Makes a killer face mask (mix ¼ tsp with a few drops of water).  Can be used for freaking out your dog or scaring young children.  Also restores moisture, clears bacteria, and promotes skin elasticity.  

So perhaps you’re intrigued?   Now what?  How do you use this stuff?

  1. Smoothie it.  Add bananas, dates, ginger, lemon juice, water, and spirulina to a blender and blend on high until fully combined. 
  2. Make a dressing.  Mix lemon juice, spirulina, sea salt, cold pressed olive oil, a little water, and your favorite spices together for a green boosted salad topping.
  3. Add some spirulina powder to your favorite energy bar recipe.  
  4. Mix it into guacamole (my answer to lots of life’s questions).

Disclaimer:  The smell might get some getting used to.  It’s the strongest on its own and it’s pacified when mixed into food.
