4 Ways To Reduce Your Everyday Plastic Use

So, news just in: plastic is bad. Like, really bad. And we use a lot of it. Sometimes without realizing. For example. I drink coffee every day. literally, every day. and I never really gave much thought to the fact that every day when I get a coffee to-go I am getting a plastic cup and sometimes a plastic straw, which, even in my unaware state, is TOTALLY contributing to the plastic problem we all face today. No. Bueno. Taren. 

No. Bueno (but also, like, no need to be hard on yourself. knowledge is power, and I’m about to give you a shit-load of power.)

"But I didn't know we had a plastic problem" 

Totally cool, and no shame. Lemme give you a little rundown of whats happening on our planet. These are just a few of my favorite, horrifying plastic facts. For more check out this handy dandy fact sheet. 

  1. Humans buy about 1,000,000 plastic bottles per minute in total. Plastic bottles take around 450+ years to decompose, and only about 23% of plastic bottles are recycled within the U.S.

  2. About one trillion single-use plastic bags are used annually across the globe. That’s nearly 2 million every minute.

  3. Half a million straws are used in the world every day. Straws take Upwards of 200 years to decompose.

  4. 40 percent of plastic produced is packaging, used just once and then discarded.

  5. Single-use-plastics frequently do not make it to a landfill or are recycled. A full 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging produced annually is left to flow into our oceans; the equivalent of pouring one garbage truck of plastic into the ocean every minute. This is expected to increase to two per minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050. By 2050, this could mean there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans

Okay, so.. if you are anything like me, all of this (which is just scratching the surface really) is really overwhelming. But, good news! There are a few simple ways to reduce your single-use plastic usage and create a more sustainable future for you and our planet!

4 Ways To Reduce Your EVERYDAY PLASTIC USE

1. Get on the Reusable Mug Bandwagon

I have two of these Stanley mugs because, well, one in the car and one in the sink. I basically buy coffee every day, and every shop I’ve ever been to will serve it to you in your own mug. I’ve DRASTICALLY cut back on my single-use by bringing my own mug with me. If you want some sweet suggestions check these out!


2. Ditch the Disposable Cutlery

Instead of feeling bad every time I got lunch out, I started keeping a set of HumanGoods reusable cutlery in the glovebox of my car. One more easy step toward sustainability.

4. Say Yes To Metal Straws!

The first time I said “I’ll just have a water. No ice, no straw please.I felt pretty silly. But the more accustomed to it, I became the more proud I felt. Now, along with my reusable cutlery I keep a metal straw in my glovebox so any time I order an iced drink to go I have the option of using a straw!

I just wrote the most bangin’ intro to this post, and then promptly— ACCIDENTALLY — deleted it. Sucks to suck, man. But, it was something along the lines of “hey, plastic is bad. especially single use. so, stop it.” And, yes. I made sure to mention how I was talking to myself, first, because “we are all learning and growing and I’m not trying to offend anyone, but we need change.” Etc. Etc. Etc. Anyways.

I know what you’re thinking, “but I always forget my mugs, bags, ___, ___, ___” Yea, I get it. I did too. My success rate with remembering to bring my reusable mug at first was trash! but the more I did it, the better I felt about myself and my contribution to our sustainable future. And the more I cultivated that habit, the more important it became and the better I felt about myself. now it’s part of my ritual.

Earth Day Challenge — N.3: Contribute

EARTH DAY HAS ARRIVED! 

And what a sweet day it is. If you need a quick rundown of what we've been talking about in this post series leading up to earth day (or a bit about Earth Day itself) check out the first post in this series!

As I was sitting here wrestling with these posts, asking myself questions like “why is this even worth writing about?” and, “what do I hope to accomplish with them?” I just kept hearing the word Longevity. 

What is the point? Longevity. 
Why is it important? Longevity.
What’s the goal? Longevity. 

We live in a world with a ‘here and now’ mentality. It’s all about what we want in the moment and we often give little thought to the future, or the impact we are having on it. When was the last time you stopped and asked what the world might look like for your children? or your children’s children? Or even for you in 50 years?

The negative impact we are having on our world can be overwhelming to think about, but I like to remind myself that it’s not the end all be all. Big process in made with little steps. And with each little step, we have the ability to take action and make change, for the good, which is what Earth Day is all about. 

So, for part three of this post let’s take a peek at our last Good Life Bucket: Contribution. 

Jonathan defines your contribution bucket as being about “contributing to the world… in a way that is meaningful, in a way that matters and allows you to feel like you matter.” So, how are you contributing? And how can you contribute in light of Earth Day? How can you take one step in the direction of change? 

One thing I like to remember when it comes to implementing/choosing change to choose action that is, well, actionable. If you know you won’t follow through, than it’s probably not a small enough step for you. And small is ok! PLEASE KNOW THAT SMALL IS OK! It’s helpful to remember that a minute change in trajectory now will always create big change in the long run. And, the good news is it’s easy! It might take a bit of intentionality to move into a new habit, or create a bit of change in your every day, but it’s worth it if it alters the flow of your future and the future of this planet. 

In light of Earth Day and our challenge to fill our buckets with things that help drive the message of Earth Day; connection, sustainability, awareness...

here are a few small steps you can take to help get you in the spirit of Earth Day, Every day!
 

Pick Up Trash

Our buddies over at Keep It Wild Co, which we mentioned in our last post, are hosting wilderness cleanups all over the place and if there isn’t one in your area, they can help you host your own! But it doesn’t have to be a big deal every time. Have you ever paid attention to how much trash you walk by every day? What if instead of cringing as you walked past, you grabbed that water bottle, or that chip bag and threw it away! That’s one small step in a VERY beautiful direction.

Use Reusable Bags

I want to write a whole post on this bad boy, but for now, I’ll start here. Honestly, it was sort of a sweet little wake-up call when I started my research on reusable grocery bags. I'm a big fan of reusable bags, but I also, almost always, forget them at home and opt for paper at the store. It's a feel-good thing, thinking I'm doing the earth a service by choosing a biodegradable, renewable resource. Which would be fine and dandy, if that were the long and short of it. 

Turns out that the production of paper bags is actually more harmful than the production of plastic bags. It requires more energy, more water and creates more air pollutants to make paper bags than to create plastic ones. You would have to use your reusable bag somewhere around 200 times to offset the negate the environmental impact of using a plastic bag. Which seem like a lot— which IS a lot— but, judging by The Great Pacific Garbage Patch alone I think it’s fair to say that we owe it to ourselves, and our planet, to be a little more intentional with our existence. 

Don’t hear me wrong, this isn’t me advocating for plastic bags, they suck. and they’re an aesthetic nightmare. What I am saying though is that if we take a second to get educated, and to follow through (and not just do what’s easy), we could make a serious impact for the good. Buy your reusable bags, and USE them!

Think Sustainable

Buying Tupperware? Try Glass. Need a water bottle for your hike? Try buying a reusable one instead of grabbing a plastic one at the store. Little swaps like this make a big difference.
 

Eat Less Meat

Okay, okay, calm down. I’m not suggesting you become a vegan (or am I?) but! according to a study led by Gidon Eshel of Bard College meat consumption has a bigger impact on our carbon footprint than cars. If you’re a raging carnivore, that’s a pretty big deal. One that might be worth considering how you can make a small change in your consumption on behalf of the planet. 
 

Practice Conservation (And Mindfulness)

For a long time I thought this was common knowledge, but I guess my mother was just a stickler for energy conservation (also known as not wanting to pay a million dollars because I left all the lights on.) I learned real young to turns lights off when I left a room or to turn the water off as I was brushing my teeth. You can also help conserve energy by unplugging devices when they are not in use! They’re baby steps, but they’re steps nonetheless!

Earth Day Challenge — N.2: Connect

Hey Guys! Welcome to part two of three of our Good Life Bucket challenge leading up to Earth Day. If you want a quick rundown of what the Good Life Buckets are and what Earth Day is all about you can find it in the first post by clicking here. That said, let's get on with it! 

Our second bucket according to Jonathan is our Connection bucket. He defines our connection bucket as being about how we nourish relationships. This bucket is filled by participating in healthy connection with the world around us; when we give love and receive love without condition; when we feel we belong—we’re seen, understood, and embraced by friends with shared values, interests, and aspirations; when we are connected to something bigger than ourselves, be it natural or ethereal. 

Things, like being intentional with friends and family and making space and time for organic moments are big parts of filling this bucket for me, but another way I've found I feel connected is by finding brands and small-business that share my voice and my values. Life moves fast and there isn't always time to connect intentionally with every single person we meet, but we can sport clothing (and use products) that say the things we want to say. How great is it that we can give our time and our resources, but we can also represent ourselves and spread our message through our clothing.

Earth Day Challenge — N.1: Wake up, Get Amongst It.

With earth day right around the corner (April 22, people!) I thought I’d highlight of some of the things that are important to me when it comes to our earth (sustainability, awareness, conservation of lands, etc) but before I do I wanted to give you a quick rundown of what Earth Day is all about. 

Earth day began in 1970 as one of the largest demonstrations in human history. More than 10,000 events engaged 20 million people across America as a call to action on behalf of our planet. Since then Earth Day has evolved into a worldwide, annual event celebrating humankind’s connection to the Earth and has carried its activist roots into the 21st century in an ongoing effort to raise awareness, provide education and create a space for action and change for the environmental challenges we face today.

As I was thinking about how to approach Earth Day this year I felt this frustration with how difficult it often feels to take big ideas such as earth preservation, sustainability and our responsibility in the mix and bring them into actionable terms. But when I asked myself the question of “why is this important to me, and how can I make it accessible/relatable” I was reminded of this framework called The Good life Buckets, which I came across it a while ago. 

The GLB’s were created by this guy Jonathan Fields, and in short “offers a way to look at the life you’re living, quickly and easily access what’s working and what’s not, and instantly know where to focus your energy to make things better; the fuller our buckets, the better our lives.”

So how do we fill our buckets, and how does that relate to Earth Day?

Filling your buckets is easy. You do the things that fulfill the needs each bucket presents. Jonathan outlines our three buckets as Vitality, Connection and Contribution. Each one requires you to take action to fill it, resulting in your happiness and fulfillment in this life. And leading up to Earth Day I'll create a post for each bucket.

So my earth day challenge is this: Fill your buckets with things that help drive the message of Earth Day; connection, sustainability, awareness. 

Bucket N.1
Your Vitality Bucket

Jonothan describes your vitality bucket as being concerned about your optimal state of mind and body. It includes things like taking your energy, fitness, health and mental state into consideration. To fill your vitality bucket you partake in activities that contribute to your well being. He makes note of observing that Vitality isn’t just about our bodies, but about our minds as well! What keeps you feeling optimistic? Grateful and balanced? Those are the things that we want to focus on. 

So, how does that relate to Earth Day? Well, one of the greatest things we can do for ourselves is to, as the Kiwi’s say, Get Amongst It. Get amongst it is a New Zealand colloquial that I was reminded of recently, which in short translates to “just do it, with all of you.” It’s only when we are ‘woke’ to ourselves that we have the ability to give outwardly in a healthy and helpful way. So, if we are to get involved and creating long-lasting change in our lives, the first step is to make sure we are happy and healthy. It's from there that you will be able to better contribute to the world around you!
 

Here are a few ways you can fill your vitality bucket, in the spirit of Earth Day. 
 

Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is an underrated tool in my humble opinion. Studies actually show that expressing gratitude has physical and psychosocial benefits. We have so much to be grateful for and so often we let it slip by. On days where gratitude seems to be in short supply I start with something small and stupid (I'm thankful for the sun, I'm thankful for my breath, I'm thankful for my car.. you’ll be surprised at how small beginnings grow into deep and meaningful professions of gratitude) and I am always surprised at how it shifts my perspective and attitude. 

Mindfulness

Take a second and slow down. Own your reality as it is, and embrace the growth that you know is necessary. Be quiet. Listen. Take your time. Disconnect from your reactivity and learn to operate from a place of balance. 

Excercise

Get outside! Go enjoy some nature. Move your body and put your energy to good use! Exercise boosts your energy levels and contributes to so many good and healthy processes in your body. What better way to fill your vitality bucket than with a little bit of Mother Nature herself? 

Sleep

Seems like a no-brainer, but sleep is vitally (ha) important to our well being. Your detox pathways start working, your body naturally reduces your stress and you produce growth hormones which help you repair and rejuvenate.

As you may have (or may not have) noticed, I haven't written a whole lot lately. I've been pretty uninspired when it comes to blogging. Every time I sit down with the intention to write I feel sort of.. colorless. I know that might seem like an odd way of putting it (I'm an abstract thinker, get on board) but that's the picture in my head when I try to put words to why I've slowed my roll.

See, I used to just..write. I'd sit down and spill my guts. I'd share my thoughts and my dreams and my ideas and the things I was interested in and that was enough for me. And the blog picked up a bit of speed. It felt good, I liked the responses. But every so often I'd get a well-meaning comment from a friend or someone I cared about suggesting I do this or this, or maybe it should be structured this way, or my writing format wasn't correct, or my thoughts were so abstract I wasn't reaching my audience the way I could be if only I was a bit more practical.. and on it came. And I took it all to heart because I want to learn. I know that I will always have room to grow, and I appreciate the good intentions, honestly. But I also found that the more I tried to format correctly and speak in a voice that connected, which clearly wasn't my own, natural voice, the more it became work and the less I wanted to do it. 

Here we are, roughly two months into the new year and I've written, what, one post? Because I was worried about shit like starting a sentence with but and how that may or may not be grammatically correct? barf. And while there are only a handful of you that I know who personally read this blog, I want to say I'm sorry! And not for the reason you might think. I'm sorry because I allowed something someone said (that didn't end up working for me) to keep me from doing something I love.

Let me be clear, I think that saying yes to learning and growth is important. And I think that being open and willing to change, to be teachable and allow others to speak into your creative work is necessary. But at the end of the day if it doesn't work for you, then it doesn't work for you. You should never allow someone else's idea of right or wrong stop you from doing what you came to do: create. You are an innovator, an artist and the captain of your own damn ship. So, do the damn thing, whatever it looks like. Make some shit, and if they don't like it, good news: THEY DONT HAVE TO READ IT/WATCH IT/HANG IT ON THEIR WALLS. 

So, here I am officially saying, and maybe just for myself, that I'm not sorry that I probably won't check all your boxes. I will more than likely have spelling, grammatical errors, and my favorite epic run on sentences, not because I don't care, but because I don't have an editor and sometimes shit happens. And I'm honestly, truly, just gonna write about the stuff that makes me stoked on life. Because that's what this was all about in the first place. Living a life you're stoked about. 

I hope your 2018 has started off badass and continues along that trajectory well into the future.

Two Tea's To Kickstart Your Day (In Lieu Of Coffee)

I love coffee. I love energy, and I love productivity. That is the long, and the short of it, really. But, more recently I've found myself gravitating toward tea. Why? I have no idea. Blame it on three years straight of espresso on my fragile tummy, or my need to work from home sometimes, but either way it seems that my every day cup of joe has been for the time replaced. The good news is: giving up coffee doesn't mean giving up my morning burst of energy and productivity-- in fact, research suggests that tea is actually more beneficial as a whole.

BUT WHY, WHY TEA? 

The National Institutes of Health reports that Tea naturally contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which, at certain doses, has been shown to improve cognitive clarity and have a relaxing effect on the brain without grogginess. Plus tea is packed full of antioxidants, which protect the body from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. 

Some other benefits to swapping out coffee for tea are: decreased inflammation (polyphenols in tea help fight inflammation), hydration (tea is comprised mostly of H20), improved insulin sensitivity and has been proven to help decrease stress levels! 

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a good cup of coffee here and there, but I am also glad to share that I've found a couple teas that pack the same caffeine punch (if not more) than your average espresso. PROTIP: I usually drink half in the morning and half in the evening for sustained energy.

Real talk: while I have my moments, I'm not usually tryna put a ton of sugar and carbs into my body while drinking tea. 4 Essentials For a Killer Solo-Hike


One of my favorite extracurriculars has always been hiking/trail running. Not only is it a great workout but its a perfect time to allow my brain to engage in something other than work. The whole experience feels like a sort of meditation. An intentional time to check out of the world and into myself.

So, whether your first hike, or your five-hundredth (which probably means you don't need to be reading this) I've pulled together a couple of things I've found are crucial for a good hike.

1. FIND A GOOD PODCAST / CREATE A PLAYLIST

Don't get me wrong, half of the reason I love hiking instead of a gym sesh is to be able to tap into nature. So for the sake of that, and for safety, I typically only leave one ear bud in while on the mountain. But, I also find it helpful to have something else to focus on aside from my burning muscles on the way up. And I love a good podcast.

For the way down (usually at a faster pace) I like to tap into a good playlist. I suggest finding or creating one with a good tempo to pace yourself to. Spotify is King.

2. INVEST IN SOME GOOD GEAR

Good gear is critical. Especially when hiking/trail running. Nobody wants a rolled ankle, nor do you want to run out of water halfway through. I'm not an expert, let me make that abundantly clear. But do some research! Find what works for you. I've found that the four things I can't do without are:

A good pair of shoes: I run in nikes
A good bag: I shamelessly use a fanny pack -- find what works for you! I've found I need something to hold my keys, water & phone.
Sunglasses: And not something that bounces all over your face. Find something with UV protection and thick side arms!
Smart Clothing: I advise against cotton. No thank you chaffing. No Thank you swamp ass. I'm a huge fan of Dry Fit Tech & Under Armour as a whole.

3. BE TRAIL SMART

I can not tell you how many time I've almost slammed into people or fallen off the mountain because people refuse to stick to their side of the trail. I would say the basics of hiking are the same as driving on a narrow road. If someone is coming (especially if they are running) just move to the side. ALWAYS YOUR RIGHT. Don't make this a case of Awkward Squirrel. Use common sense. Read the situation. Slow down or stop and move as far right as possible and/or is necessary to let them pass.

4. REMEMBER YOUR BODY

Y'ALL. HYDRATE. ALWAYS. And then do some research. Figure out what your body needs pre-hike to stay fueled, as well as the best way for you to treat your mind and muscles to some recovery post-hike.

A couple weeks ago I hit the road with friends for a day trip into the desert. I feel like I spend a large majority of my time working, but I promised myself that this year I would make time for people and for the moments that are made with them. After all, our lives are made of up things like these, right? Moments. At the end of my days I want to be able to look back and reflect on time well spent, a life well lived. And live we did! We laughed till it hurt, sweat more than any human should (frolicking around in a field of poppies) and drove until I passed out in the back seat (which, for the record, is like my road-trip superpower).

In looking back I realized that there are a few things that are essential for any spring adventure: comfortable clothing, a few great accessories and a durable bag (for all the snacks, duh). 

So, whether a trip to the mountains, an adventure in the desert or a Sunday spent picking through treasures at the local market - whatever you decide to do - do it!  Make some memories and take your adventure head on.

Some Sciency Sh*t: The Power Of Our Thoughts

To all you young-bucks and birds reading this (and their parents who may or may not approve of such language) you're welcome for the * in the title. On the other hand we all know that regardless of asterix you probably said the word in your mind anyways so.. Ya. I don't know. The truth is I just needed a good transition: 

Speaking of minds.. (SO GOOD RIGHT?)

I'm a firm believer in the power of our thoughts. I believe that scientifically our thoughts are made up of energy patterns (quantum physics, google it.) and since, according to Albert Einstein, everything in the universe is made up of energy as well ( E= mc2, google it.) it only stands to reason that our thoughts affect us and everything around us.

So, where does that leave us?
It's said that on average humans have around 60,000 thoughts per day,

with 98% of them exactly the same as the day before (and near to 80% of them being negative - what the actual hell, people.) 

With that information alone I'd say building healthy thought patterns is pretty important. While we are symbiotic creatures made up of mind, body and spirit our minds are the gateway to our realities.

To quote a Chinese proverb, 

"Be careful of your thoughts, for your thoughts become your words. Be careful of your words, for your words become your actions. Be careful of your actions, for your actions become your habits. Be careful of your habits, for your habits become your character. Be careful of your character, for your character becomes your destiny."

Simply put: our thoughts become our realities.
Which begs the question(s): What do you want out of life, who do you want to be and are you cultivating the thought-life to support that outcome? 

 

Here are a few must-know's and ideas to make your mind your biatch: 

 

1. IT TAKES INTENTION (#action)

As much as we often hate the work aspect of growth the truth is your mind and your habits are not going to change without action. Discipline is a word my free-spirit loathes, but something that holds great value. It's takes time to change and you have to be wiling to say yes to that again and again, especially when our environment is working in opposition of us.
 

2. REPEAL AND REPLACE

Speaking of politics (just kidding, #no).. But seriously, consider your character, and do it honestly. Who do you want to be? What kind of human do you want to be known as? According to the proverb our character becomes our destinies. So, get in there. Do some digging, listen to yourself, then when and where necessary repeal and replace that crap which limits you. 
 

3. USE YOUR WORDS, FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS

You are and can do what you believe you are and can do. 
"..your words become your actions."

You have an inexhaustible well of words. So, give them away. You know how much effort it takes to change, so why not remind someone else how they're killing it at life. It costs you nothing to tell someone how talented and beautiful they are. And you benefit: the more positivity you pump into an atmosphere, the less room there is for negativity. When you teach yourself to look for and call out the good in others you are creating habits through which you see the world. Through which you see yourself. 
 

4. COFFEE, QUOTES AND QUIET

Okay. I know people go sideways with words like meditation but let's discuss. If we already have around 60,000 thoughts a day and our thoughts influence our reality I think it's fair to say that teaching ourselves to start our day in the positive isn't as whacko as some people make it seem. 

Grab a coffee, your journal, a good quote, positive thought or bible verse and sit with it. The University College London says that it takes 66 days to build a habit. 66 days, 5 minutes every morning. Thats 330 minutes (like.. the equivalent of three movies over two months..) dedicated to influencing your life for the better. Worth it? I'd say so.
